These are the covers for the Fat Tire Flyer, the first publication for mountain bikers. I started publishing it in 1980 with Denise Caramagno, and it ceased publication in 1987.

When we started, the Fat Tire Flyer was the only publication in the world for mountain bikers. It was not until five years later that another national publication appeared, and by the time the Fat Tire Flyer ceased publication in 1987 there were several major publishing houses competing with us for a share of the mountain bike market.

You can see in the sequence of covers the development we made from a photocopied newsletter to a real magazine.

Cindy Whitehead was national mountain bike champion in 1986. During the '80s she was a prominent racer and a member of the national team. See my website for more mountain biking history.

These are photos of mountain bike racer John Tomac. The photos cover a period from roughly 1986 to 1990. The black and white photo, which is cropped and enlarged to show the bike was taken during John Tomac's first mountain bike race, the Tour of Tampaland in 1985.
